US Cellular Launches WP 7.5-Based ZTE Render

Wireless carrier US Cellular has just made available for purchase on its network a new device running under Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5 operating system, namely the ZTE Render.

This is the smartphone previously known as ZTE Orbit, capable of offering some appealing features to the carrier’s users.

The handset was announced with a $179 price tag attached to it with the signing of a two-year contract agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate.

The phone’s specs list includes a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen, along with a 1GHz MSM7627A Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU and 512MB of RAM packed inside.

Moreover, it comes with a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, as well as with 4G of internal memory. A 1600mAh battery has been packed inside the smartphone, along with the Windows Phone 7.5 Tango 2 platform.

Samsung Galaxy S III Arrives at C Spire

Wireless carrier C Spire has made available for purchase on its network a new highly appealing smartphone, namely the Galaxy S III.

The handset lands on shelves at this operator in time for the company’s 4G LTE rollout, and should prove a worthy rival to Apple’s iPhone 5, which has just been launched at the carrier too.

In fact, C Spire already announced a few weeks back that it would launch Samsung’s high-end smartphone, when it unveiled its 4G LTE rollout plans, along with the release of Motorola PHOTON 4G on its network.

Galaxy S III is now listed on C Spire’s website with a price tag of $199.99 attached to it with the signing of a two-year contract agreement on a data plan.

The smartphone is available in Marble White and Pebble Blue and packs 16GB of internal memory, complemented by a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 64GB of additional storage space.

Packing a large touchscreen and a fast and powerful application processor inside, the handset is said to be the best Android-based smartphone of the year.

“See more of your world with the Samsung Galaxy S III and its 4.8-inch SUPER AMOLED touch screen,” the wireless carrier notes.

“Do more with its 1.5 GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor. Share more with excellent front and rear cameras. The Galaxy S III is the next big thing.”

The mobile phone comes to the market with an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, capable of recording video in full HD resolution, complemented by a front camera for making video calls.

It also sports Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11 a/b/g/n 2.4/5GHz), Bluetooth v4.0, GPS turn-by-turn navigation featuring Google Maps, support for CDMA 850/1900 MHz connectivity, and a 2100 mAh Li-Ion battery that can deliver extended usage times.

Those of you who are interested in the purchase of Galaxy S III at C Spire should head over to the wireless carrier’s website to learn more on the available offer.

Galaxy Note II at the FCC with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Bands

Galaxy Note II, the largest smartphone that Samsung has unveiled to the world with Google’s Android operating system on board, has been spotted at the FCC once again.

This time, however, it appears that it was packing the necessary frequencies support for being used in the United States at AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

FCC approved a SGH-i317 with 3G and 4G bands at AT&T and in Canada, while the SGH-T889 model was approved with support for T-Mobile’s 1,700MHz AWS frequencies.

There is also a SCH-i605 model that passed through the testing with CDMA and GSM bands inside, along with support for a 700MHz LTE band, suggesting that it should land at Verizon soon.

As Engadget notes, no specific info on the handset’s release date in the United States has been provided as of yet, but October 24th might bring it to shelves.

No ICS for ATRIX 2, ELECTRIFY and PHOTON 4G, Motorola Confirms

Last week, Motorola provided some details on its plans for the release of new software updates for its Android-based devices, but some things have changed in the meantime.

At that time, the company said that it was set to offer some more info on its plans for releasing OS upgrades for a series of handsets, and now it has provided confirmation on what will happen with these devices.

Motorola ATRIX 4G, Motorola PHOTON 4G and Motorola Electrify were among these, and it all comes as bad news for their owners, as the company will keep the phones with Android 2.3 loaded on them.

For many this might not come too much as a surprise, since Motorola has done the same before, but we were all expecting for things to change a bit following Google’s acquisition of the phone maker.

Open webOS 1.0 Edition Released

Verizon Wireless is getting ready to provide the owners of a DROID Xyboard 8.2 tablet on its network with a brand new experience, courtesy of the Ice Cream Sandwich software update for the device.

The company has already provided specific info on the new OS via its support website, confirming that it will be released as version number 12.11.31.MZ609.

The update weighs 299.2MB and will bring along a nice range of enhancements, though it appears that Verizon actually forgot to deliver specifics on when it would be delivered.

Owners of this device might already be able to see the update available for them when performing manual checks, and it would be a good idea to verify whether the package has been already pushed to your tablet of not.

Here are some of the improvements included in the update

- The direct access lock screen takes you directly to Camera, Browser, Gallery or Unlock.

- Easily create folders by dropping one app on top of another. You can also add a name to specify the folder contents.

- Multitask with ease using the Recent Apps Feature. Just press and hold the Home Key to access and easily switch applications by tapping on thumbnails or swipe away apps that you are done with to close.

- Monitor your data usage all in one place. Set warning levels check individual app usage or turn off data completely.

- Important Note: The on-device Data Usage meter may not match the amount of data for which the customer will be charged by Verizon Wireless because the on-device meter may include data usage that is not billed to the customer.

- The My Verizon Mobile app reflects billable data usage and best indicator of how much of the current month’s data allowance has been used.

Additionally, the update will deliver the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich platform to DROID Xyboard 8.2 units, which will include the latest Motorola USB driver so that one can connect the tablet to a computer to transfer files.

A native email client to securely refresh Corporate Email accounts will also be provided, along with a better browsing experience and improved connectivity.

For more info, users should head over to Verizon’s support website.

Sony Pushes Ice Cream Sandwich to Xperia go, Xperia U and Xperia sola

On Friday, mobile phone maker Sony announced the immediate availability of a new software update for its Xperia go, Xperia U and Xperia sola smartphones.

The new update brings along the long-awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, along with a series of media applications unique to these devices.

The deployment will be a staged one, set to continue over the next few weeks to all markets around the world where these handsets were made available for purchase.

Some of the enhancements packed inside the new update include:

- New ways to experience your tunes, images, videos and films with Sony’s media applications – “WALKMAN”, “Album” and “Movies”
- Extended standby mode, increasing standby time by up to four times (depending on user-profile and data consumption)
- Lock screen with improved functionality
- Resizable widgets for improved personalization
- Improved control of your mobile data consumption
- Recent Apps button for a clear overview of your applications

According to Sony, the rollout has started on Friday and will ramp up over the weekend. Starting with the middle of the next week, users will receive specific info on software kits via Sony’s support community.

These kits will be customized for the specific wireless carrier and handsets that users own in the various markets around the world.

Users interested in performing the update will need to connect their handsets to a desktop, be it a Windows PC or a Mac.

“I’m also excited to tell you about ‘Glove Mode’ – a sweet feature in the software upgrade for Xperia sola (known as Xperia sole in some markets),” a Sony employee notes in a blog post.

“It’s an extension of our ‘floating touch’ technology that makes it possible to use your Xperia sola in the cold whilst wearing gloves… just in time for the winter months.”

Stay tuned for more info on how the rollout of these updates progresses.

HTC Unveils the One XC for China

Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has unveiled a new Android-based smartphone specifically designed for the Chinese market, namely the HTC One XC.

The new handset features a quad-core Qualcomm S4 processor and 1GB of RAM (though HTC China lists it with a dual-core CPU), along with a large 4.7-inch 1280 × 720 touchscreen display, while being powered by Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

On the back, HTC One XC sports an 8-megapixel photo snapper with LED flash and support for HD video recording. It also comes with 16GB of internal memory, and features all the usual connectivity capabilities and sensors. The smartphone is powered by a 2,000mAh battery.

HTC hasn’t provided specific info on the phone’s pricing in the country, nor did it offer specifics on its launch date.

Firefox for Android Beta 16.0 is now available for download

A new version of Mozilla’s Firefox for Android 16 Beta application is now available for download, offering support for all devices that pack at least an 800MHz application processor and a minimum of 512MB of RAM.

The beta flavor of the browser comes with a new Reader Mode, while also offering users the possibility to share tabs with their desktops or with other mobile devices using sync.

The app also comes with a fix for Text Selection for static web pages, as well as with better JavaScript responsiveness, the release notes available in the Google Play Store read.

“With Firefox Beta, you get to test the latest performance, customization and security enhancements before they make it to our next version,” Mozilla notes. However, you should keep in mind that this is a beta software, bound to pack various issues inside.

iPhone 5 Now Available at C Spire

Today, Apple’s new iPhone model becomes available for purchase in the United States on the networks of more wireless carriers, including C Spire.

The company confirmed plans to make the iPhone 5 available for its users starting with September 28th, and the launch date has finally arrived.

The smartphone can be seen on the wireless carrier’s website today with price tags starting at $149 for the 16GB flavor with the signing of a two-year contract agreement.

Both the black and the white versions of the mobile phone are up for order at the carrier, as well as the 32GB and 64GB models, priced at $249 and $349, respectively.

Those of you interested in the purchase of Apple’s iPhone 5 from C Spire will be able to do so on the carrier’s Choice plans that also include monthly data.

Unveiled to the world in early September, iPhone 5 features the largest touchscreen display of any iPhone model to date, while also being the tallest.

It was also announced with enhanced connectivity capabilities packed inside, as well as with a faster application processor, and with a better camera, capable of shooting videos in full HD resolution (although it does not best Nokia’s Lumia 920 in video recording capabilities).

Moreover, the handset comes with the new iOS 6 platform release from Apple, which comes with numerous enhancements when compared to the previous operating system versions.

“iPhone 5 features a 4-inch Retina display, the powerful A6 chip, an 8-megapixel iSight camera with panorama, ultrafast wireless, iOS 6, and iCloud. Yet it's the thinnest, lightest iPhone ever,” C Spire notes on its website.

Apple’s iPhone 5 handset measures 124mm x 59mm x 7.6 mm and weighs 112 grams. Its battery is said to be capable of delivering up to 8 hours of talk time or up to 225 hours of standby time.

Galaxy Note II to Arrive in the US on October 24th

Galaxy Note II, the largest Android-based smartphone to date, is expected to arrive on shelves in the United States as soon as October 24th, recent reports on the matter suggest.

Samsung has started to send out invites to a press event in New York City on that day, called “The Next Big Thing Is Here,” which could be related to the launch of this phone.

The South Korean handset vendor has already confirmed plans to make the new device available for purchase in the US on the networks of five wireless carriers, but hasn’t provided specific info on its launch as of now.

The 5.5-inch phablet packs a quad-core CPU inside, an 8-megapixel camera on the back, and Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. It also comes with a variety of exclusive features powered by the included S-Pen technology.

Galaxy S III Confirmed at MetroPCS in October

Next month, wireless carrier MetroPCS will add a new Android-based smartphone to its offering, namely the Galaxy S III from Samsung.

The company has already confirmed plans to release this device, although it hasn’t provided further info on the release date or pricing of Galaxy S III. At MetroPCS, the flagship Android device will be put up for sale contract free, which means that users will have to pay the full, unsubsidized price for it.

Featuring a 4.8-inch touchscreen display and a powerful chip inside, the phone can offer great performance to all users. It also sports an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, along with a front camera for video calling.

The phone should offer support for MetroPCS’ 4G LTE network when launched, since it did the same at other wireless carriers in the country.

Google Intros Google Play Services for Android Developers

On Thursday, Google announced the availability of Google Play Services for developers who are interested in integrating additional functionality inside their mobile applications.

The availability of this development platform was announced initially at the Google I/O conference, and things appear to have been finally put in order for public availability.

The launch of Google Play services v1.0 includes Google+ APIs and new OAuth 2.0 functionality at the moment, the company announced.

“Google Play services is a platform delivered by the Google Play Store that offers integration with Google products, such as Google+, in Android apps. The Google Play services platform consists of a services component that runs on the device and a thin client library that you package with your app,” Google explains.

“The Google Play services component is delivered as an APK through the Google Play Store, so updates to Google Play services are not dependent on carrier or OEM system image updates.”

Google also announced that the newer devices would arrive on shelves with the Google Play services included in the system image, and that updates were still being pushed to them through the Google Play Store.

According to the company, all devices that run under the Android 2.2 Froyo or newer flavors of the operating system will receive the updates through the official storefront within a few days.

“This allows you to leverage the newest APIs for Google products and reach most of the devices in the Android ecosystem. Devices older than Android 2.2 or devices without the Google Play Store app are not supported,” Google explains.

“The Google Play services component contains much of the logic to communicate with the specific Google product that you want to interact with.”

The service is accompanied by an easy-to-use authentication flow that will deliver access to a series of supported Google products, something that should deliver consistency for developers and users alike.

“From the developer's point of view, requesting credentials is mostly taken care of by the services component through calls to the client library. From the user's point of view, authorization is granted with a few simple clicks,” the company notes.

You can learn additional info on the matter on this page at Android Developers. Info on the new Google+ Platform for Android can be found via this link.

Photo of T-Mobile’s HTC One X+ Leaks

Wireless carrier T-Mobile is expected to bring to the market in the United States a new smartphone from HTC, namely the HTC One X+, recent reports suggest.

In fact, a leaked photo that emerged courtesy of @evleaks shows that the device is indeed real, although specific info on its availability hasn’t been provided as of yet.

However, the guys over at TmoNew cite sources claiming that the handset might have been delayed indefinitely, or that it has even been cancelled.

Specific details on why T-Mobile might have cancelled the launch are not available, but all might have been caused by the phone not passing certain testing at the wireless carrier, it seems.

Provided that the operator will indeed release the HTC One X+, an official announcement should be close, so stay tuned to learn more on the matter.

Updated BlackBerry 10 Development Tools Beta Available for Download

While preparing for the official launch of its BlackBerry 10 platform and of devices running under it, Research In Motion has made available updated developer tools for those interested in building apps for the OS.

App developers can choose from a variety of runtime technologies to deploy BB10 apps, including Native C/C++, Qt, HTML5, Adobe AIR and Android Java.

In the new update, the reliability of the code has been greatly improved, while the efficiency and convenience of building using the BlackBerry 10 development tools have been increased.

The BlackBerry 10 simulator and BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha were updated in the new release, RIM notes, adding that BBM-enabled apps can now be designed, and that Microsoft Visual Studio tools can be used for the porting of games to BlackBerry 10 devices.

LG Optimus 4X HD Confirmed for Canada in October

South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics is expected to make its Optimus 4X HD smartphone available for purchase in Canada as soon as next month, on the networks of WIND Mobile and Videotron.

Powered by a fast NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, the new device comes with a wide range of features that take advantage of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform loaded on it.

It also sports a 4.7-inch True HD IPS touchscreen display, as well as SiO+ battery technology packed inside, and Quick Memo to boost the productivity of its users.

"The Optimus 4X HD offers incredible speed and performance without compromising battery life," said Geoff McMurdo, vice president mobile communications, LG Electronics Canada.

“Users want intuitive software and beautiful hardware and the Optimus 4X HD is another proof point that LG is a strong player in both areas.”

The smartphone lands on shelves with an NVIDIA's 4-PLUS-1 Quad-Core mobile processor, the Tegra 3, which should provide great raw power and an enhanced experience to its users.

The smartphone also comes with an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for full HD video recording, complemented by a front camera to enable video chatting.

The usual set of connectivity options have been packed inside the device as well, including WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS receiver, USB port and the like, along with the whole range of sensors.

In addition to the appealing hardware inside the phone, LG also promises a great experience to its users, all based on the exclusive capabilities it has loaded on it. Some of them include:

QuickMemo - allows users to write, draw, or jot a memo with their finger directly on any captured screen for instant sharing as an attachment or URL

Media Plex
- a collection of software features that take image and video playback on the smartphone to a level that until now was only possible on a PC or laptop. Some innovative features include:

- Fingertip Seek that shows a preview of any video frame simply by touching the progress bar;
- Live Zooming allowing viewers to zoom in and out by pinching during video playback;
- Video Speed Control for precise control of the playback speed of videos; Thumbnail List Play which enables users to view thumbnails of videos playing while watching another video full screen.

LG hasn’t provided specific info on the pricing of Optimus 4X HD in Canada, nor did it offer an exact release date for the new device at WIND Mobile and Videotron.
